If one word could be said to encapsulate the essence of Goa, it would have to be the Portuguese sossegado, meaning "laid-back". For Goan expatriates, the term is redolent of sultry evenings on pillared verandas, chatting with family and neighbours, with the scent of cashew or frangipani flowers in the air and the crash of surf drifting through a curtain of coconut trees. Modern times for many in the state may be a far cry from this rather rose-tinted vision, but it's one that still holds true in lots of coastal villages; in spite of the increasing pace of its capital, beach resorts and market towns, Goa has retained the relaxed feel and Latin-influenced "savoir vivre" that has always set it apart from the rest of the country- Nowhere else in the subcontinent will you find traditional Indian ways co-existing so peacefully and easily with those implanted by Europeans, and to this day a tolerant attitude to foreignness remains a distinctively Goan trait.
