These churches provide a unique insight into life and belief during the Middle Ages. The book starts with a brief outline of the different typesof church buildings in Europe. Subsequently, the focus shifts to fifteen types of furniture discussed in richly illustrated chapters. Each chapter starts with a description of the form and function of the element in question, followed by a survey of preserved examples in different countries. The photos include both general views with the emphasis on the element in its context, and pictures of the object itself with striking details.
