December 18, 1904), nicknamed "Honest John", was a professional baseball catcher and manager. He was born in Ithaca, NY. Clapp was a strong hitter, by the standards of the time, ranking among his league's leaders in on-base percentage three times and slugging percentage once. He led the National League in games played in 1878, and in walks in 1881. He was also extremely difficult to strike out, fanning a grand total of six times from 1872-1876.
