Pineapple is grown widely in tropics and sub-tropics. Lack of planting material is one of the constraints of pineapple cultivation in the world. This is because the rate of propagation is slow in conventional propagation. 'Smooth Cayenne' typically produces few propagules per plant per year hence it would take years to plant one hectare from a single plant. As a result, it is difficult to fulfill the demand for planting material. This has forced pineapple growers to make effort for rapid propagation techniques such as tissue culture.
