Painter, sculptor, and draughtsman Immendorff is arguablyone of the most important German artists of the post-warperiod. The artist, who died in 2007, was a close friend ofAgnes and Karlheinz Essl, two art collectors whose privatecollection includes many of Immendorff s works, in addition toother important contemporaries of the artist, such as GeorgBaselitz, Anselm Kiefer, and Gerhard Richter. This exhibitioncatalog serves as tribute to the work of Immendorff andfeatures more than 70 paintings, drawings, and sculpturesdating from the 1960s, in addition to numerous texts andletters. The range of Immendorff s oeuvre reflects his earlyinvolvement with politics and social issues and his gradualmovement toward existential ideas. A highlight of this volume isa series of 32 sketches, created exclusively for the Essls, andnever before published in book form.
