English summary: The work of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) is presented in this monograph in all its breadth. His prominent position within the history of expressionism is revealed here both in light of pictural examples - mostly from the collection of the Brucke-Museum in Berlin - and comprehensive, accompanying texts. Schmidt-Rottluff is one of the great German Expressionists. As co-founder of the artist group "Brucke" in Dresden in 1905, he contributed to the writing of art history. He abandoned his architectural studies to work as a freelance artist and, together with his "Brucke" colleagues Kirchner, Heckel, Nolde and Pechstein, developed a mode of expression that radically broke with all previously established rules. Unmixed and diverse colors and an ever more simplified form of language are indicative of Schmidt-Rottluff's expressionism.
