Digital humans have recently had a great impact onthe field of ergonomics. An increasing number oforganizations are now using digital humans in thedesign and testing of complex systems. Instead ofclassical prototyping approaches used for testing andevaluation of new designs, these organizations arerelying on simulations in virtual environments to getfeedback about their designs.Since a primary goal of using digital humans is tostudy the interaction between the human and a productin a virtual world, digital humans must havesufficient capabilities to manipulate and graspvirtual objects. We apply several ideas from the fields of robotics,pattern recognition and computer graphics to create anew interactive grasping system for a digital humancalled SantosTM that is being developed at theVirtual Soldier Research Laboratory at The Universityof Iowa
