This book was originally published in 1908 by Archibald Constable & Co. for the Fishmonger's Company, one of the twelve great livery companies of the City of London. This was appropriate because it was to the Fishmongers that Thomas Doggett entrusted the bequest which was to pay for the annual Coat and Badge race of young watermen along the Thames. Strangely, the present edition has been prepared as a keepsake for a quite different organisation, a society devoted not to the 'mistery' of Fishmongers but to the black art of printing and other allied trades and professions.
