In 1944, with England at war, twelve-year-old Elizabeth Hewes began to keep a diary. Betty's Diaries spanned the next 57 years, up until her death in 2001, in more than half a million words. She lived in Ravenstone, Leicestershire, all her life, went to school in Coalville, worked in Leicester at the Motor Vehicle Licensing office and afterwards at the Department of Energy in Wigston. This amazing work gives a vivid insight into her love of life and people; we see the post war half of the twentieth century unfold in rich colours told with extra-ordinary attention to detail, but always with humour, intelligence and a steadfast sense of belonging and purpose. Betty had intended to finish her diaries at the end of 2001. Before she died, on March 10th of that year, she asked Mary Blue, her niece, to complete them for her. Occasionally Betty would fill in certain pertinent snippets ahead of time. on the space reserved for 26th December 2001, she had written the following: So Farewell!...
