The title of this exhibition - Russian Paris - would appear to concentrate attention on the contributions of artists of Russian origin to the Ecole de Paris. This theme is, in fact, much broader, addressing the concept of a single space of culture and art. Uprooted from their native lands, emigre artists introduced the traditions of their former homelands into their new lands of abode, simultaneously aspiring to enter the context of another culture. Russian artists enjoyed various fates in France. Some now enjoy the same fame as the leading French masters. Others were less successful, remaining within the ranks of the Russian emigres.
